When my husband and I moved into our home, we inherited a key hanger that was not as chic as I try desperately to be. I've been looking at if for months, but I never turned it over to see what was on the back. Low and behold, it was actually Kyle's grandfather's old sign for when he investigated unemployment claims. Look at that, Grandpa Dana was a secret crafter at heart! Either way, I needed a little update.
Last weekend while I was out thrifting, I picked up a fabulous, rustic mirrored shelf for less than $13 at an antique store. I have a lot of random little mirrors in my house so I decided to try an easy fabric cover to give it some country charm. I used just over a square foot of fabric and batting, making this super affordable. Before you run out and buy materials, consider hitting up your local thrift store or Salvation Army. I found several bags of batting and dozens of funky fabrics wrapped in perfect bundles for weekend crafters, all for about $2.00!
To add the plush fabric cover, remove the mirror, layer the fabric and batting then trace and cut. Cut about 1 1/2" overage on all sides to make sure you can fully cover the mirror. To make sure the batting stayed in place, adhere it by painting glue on the back side of the mirror. After the glue dries, place the fabric over the batting and put the mirror back into its place in the shelf. It will look a little loose on the front so gently pull the fabric on all sides until you have a nice pillow in the front. Secure the backing on the mirror (like a picture frame) and you're done!
And that's how we said goodbye to Grandpa Dana's unemployment key holder and now have ourselves a rustic shelf that's certainly worthy of any set keys.
So crafty!
